iLok Account Registration and Instrument License Activation Guide

iLok is a widely used licensing system for audio software. Most commercial instrument libraries and plugins use iLok to verify valid licenses. The full activation process has three steps: register an account online, sign in to the desktop license manager, and add the instrument license to your account.

I. Register an Official iLok Account

To use iLok licensing for the first time, register a personal iLok account to store and manage your instrument and plugin licenses in one place.

1. Visit the official iLok website in your browser:Official iLok Website

2. On the home page, click Create Free Account to open the registration page.

3. Enter the required registration information:

User ID: Choose a unique account name. We recommend one you can easily identify and use for future license management and sign-ins.

Email: Enter an active email address that you use regularly to receive account verification and licensing notices.

Password: Set a strong, unique password.

Add basic personal details such as your name and date of birth.

4. After submitting the registration form, check your email for the official verification message. Click the verification link to activate your account.

II. Install and Sign In to iLok License Manager (Desktop App)

Your online account holds your licenses, but the desktop app is required to recognize, load, and verify instrument licenses.

1. From the official iLok website, download the Mac or Windows version of iLok License Manager

2. After installation, launch the desktop app.

3. Use the User ID + password you registered with to sign in to the app and initialize your local licensing environment.

 ​III. Add Instrument and Plugin Licenses

After receiving an activation code for an instrument or plugin, you can add the license using either of two official methods.

Redeem an Activation Code in the Desktop App

1. Sign in to iLok License Manager.

2. Right-click your account root (iLok Account) in the left sidebar.

3. Select Enter Activation Code

4. Enter the official license activation code and confirm redemption.

5. Choose where to store the license: this computer / iLok Cloud / iLok USB dongle.

Additional Notes and Precautions

1. Licenses can be stored in three places:on this computer, in iLok Cloud, or on an iLok USB dongle. Many current instrument libraries support cloud licensing and do not require a hardware dongle.

2. iLok verifies licenses; it does not include the software itself. After activation, you must still install the corresponding instrument or plugin before you can load it in your host software.

3. Operating system updates or cleanup tools that disable background services may prevent iLok licensing from working. Make sure the PACE background service is running.
